Auto Insurance for Florida
Auto insurance can feel like a confusing mess of options and coverages. We want to help you understand what your options are so you can make an informed decision based on the coverages you feel you need.
Not all policies are the same. Not every company offers all the same options. We want you to have peace of mind by knowing that you have the coverages that you need.
Auto Insurance can be easily understood in three parts -
1. Coverage for you to pay medical expenses (PIP, Medical Payments & Uninsured Motorist)
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is required by the state of Florida. It pays 80% of your medical bills, up to $10,000, if you are injured in an auto accident, or as a pedestrian in an auto accident, regardless of who is at fault. Some of the $10,000 can also be used for lost wages and certain required additional expenses. It also provides a $5000 death benefit. With some companies, the 80% limit can be removed (Extended PIP), and the $10,000 limit can be increased (Additional PIP).
Medical Payments provides an additional sum (how much is your choice) to pay for medical payments for you or a passenger in your car. It can be used to pay the 20% not paid by PIP, or expenses that exceed the $10,000 PIP limit.
Uninsured Motorist coverage (UM) is a very valuable coverage. although all drivers in Florida are required by law to have insurance, approximately 20% skirt the law and have no insurance! Many others have only the minimum required. If you are injured and the other driver is at fault, your first recourse is your PIP. When that is exhausted, you can pursue the other driver's insurance. If they have no insurance, or not enough insurance to pay your medical bills, your UM fills the gap and pays for your medical costs. (The limit of coverage is one of your options.)
2. Coverage for the car (Comprehensive & Collision)
Collision coverage is just that - it pays to have your vehicle repaired or replaced when it has been in a collision. It normally pays actual cash value for the vehicle at the time of the loss, less the deductible you have chosen.
Comprehensive (also called Other Than Collision), pays for loss or damage to your vehicle for anything other than a collision (for example, fire, theft, vandalism or hail) less your deductible.
3. Coverage for your liability (Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage Liability)
Bodily Injury (BI) Up to the limits you select, it pays for the medical costs incurred by someone else who has been injured and for which you are liable. This coverage frequently has a "split limit," meaning that it will pay up to a certain amount per person and a combined total per accident, regardless of how many people were injured.
Property Damage (PD) pays for damage to property of another person (their vehicle, fence, or whatever) for which you are at fault. A minimum of $10,000 is required by Florida law.
